History of the Land & Filiming

Ancient Route
Modern Castaic began in 1915 with the opening of the original Ridge Route, which brought travelers looking for gasoline, water, food and lodging to the community. The Old Ridge Route Road actually goes back further in time as it was an ancient Indian route that became the connection between northern and southern California section during the Spanish colonial period. Piru Pass, a narrow cut through a mountain on the route became legendary in early Hollywood movies as a stage hold up scene location and is still used in movie making today.

At one time, this ranch was owned by movie actor, Wallace Berry. While a chain of history was not conducted the ownership by that actor is accepted. Also, a music composer Frank Churchill resided at the ranch. Mr. Churchill was an Oscar nominee for Best Music Score (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), Academy Award nominee for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture (Dumbo) and Best Song (Baby Mine). He was also nominated for his work on "Bambi". He is well known for his musical scores for animated films. Some of his famous works are: "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?"(Three Little Pigs), "Heigh-Ho", "Whistle While You Work", "Someday My Prince Will Come" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, worked alongside Leigh Harline), he also wrote music for the animated film Dumbo and Bambi. He was a pre-med student at the University of California, Los Angeles before he dropped out to pursue a career in music. He joined The Walt Disney Studios in December 1930 and scored more than 65 animated shorts. He went on to score feature-length animated motion pictures.
